What is gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a common condition characterized by excessive enlargement of the mammary glands in men. It can be caused by hormonal imbalances, certain medications, genetic factors, or obesity. Although it does not pose a health risk, for many men it represents a significant aesthetic and psychological problem. Surgical treatment for gynecomastia involves removing the enlarged breast tissue, as well as any fatty tissue that may distort the chest area, in some cases, it may also be necessary to remove excess skin.

Consultation with an expert

  • Chest examination and determination of the type of gynecomastia (fatty vs. glandular)

Preoperative examination

  • ECG, blood tests, possibly sonography of the breasts
  • It is possible to undergo an examination at our clinic
  • Blood test results must not be older than 30 days before the procedure
  • Inform the doctor about the medicines and supplements you are taking

Preparation before the procedure

  • Stop taking blood thinners 7 days before the procedure
  • Do not smoke for 24 hours before the procedure
  • 12 h before the operation do not eat, drink alcohol or coffee
  • Do not use body creams and perfumes on the day of the procedure

Procedure

      • Lasts approximately 60 minutes
      • Liposuction – with slight enlargement, under local anaesthesia
      • Surgical removal of the gland – under general anaesthesia through an incision around the areola
      • A compression vest is put on after the procedure

After the procedure

    • 1 day inpatient or outpatient procedure (depending on anesthesia)
    • The next morning after the procedure, there is a check-up by the surgeon and usually a discharge to home care
    • Instructions for post-operative care and scar care
    • The vest is removed for the first time 3 days after surgery so you can shower

Follow up

  • A follow-up visit with the surgeon takes place 7-14 days after procedure
  • The stitches do not need to be removed, they are absorbable

Aftercare

Increased restriction: one week of rest after the procedure

Recommendations

  • Sleep on your back for 2 weeks
  • Wear the compression vest continuously for 4 weeks
  • Showering is possible after 3 days
  • Return to office work after 3-7 days
  • Sports activities possible after 4 weeks
  • Scar massage several times a day from week 3

The treatment is not suitable for people who:

  • Under 18 years of age
  • With hormonal disorders that are not under control
  • With serious health complications

Possible complications are rare and may include:

  • Bleeding, swelling, infection
  • Problems with healing
  • Asymmetry, formation of rough scars
