What is ultrasound-guided foam sclerotisation (USGFS)?

UGFS is a minimally invasive method in which sclerosing foam is injected directly into the affected vein under ultrasound control. The foam causes sterile inflammation and bonding of the vein walls, which then transforms into a connective band. The method is mainly used for the treatment of reflux in perforators (the junctions between the superficial and deep venous systems), the treatment of collateral vein branches, with success in venous ulcerations and the treatment of recurrences of varicose veins after previous operations. It is a gentle and almost painless procedure. It takes 20-40 minutes depending on the number and extent of veins treated.

Increased restriction: 1-2 weeks of rest after the procedure

Recommendations

First 3 days

  • 24 h after the procedure, avoid drugs that affect blood clotting
  • 2 days after the procedure continuous wearing of compression stockings
  • Wear the compression 24 hours a day for the next 7 days with a shower break
  • Avoid long periods of standing and sports

The following days

  • The limbs should not be tanned and should not be sunburned for at least 6 weeks after the procedure
  • Light walking recommended
  • The result is individual and depends on several factors

Contraindications

Possible complications

The treatment is not suitable for people who:

  • With deep vein thrombosis
  • With active inflammation of the veins
  • Pregnant women

Possible complications are rare and may include:

  • Bruising and hardening at the application site
  • Transient hardening in the subcutaneous tissue
  • Skin pigmentation
  • Deep vein thrombosis
