What is septoplasty and turbinoplasty?

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure in which the deviated nasal septum (septum) is adjusted to a central position to improve nasal patency. Turbinoplasty is an operation in which the thickened nasal mucosa (nasal sclera) is reduced, which also helps to improve nasal breathing. Both procedures are often performed simultaneously under general anesthesia and take approximately 60-90 minutes.

Indications:

  • Chronic cold and stuffy nose
  • Impaired breathing through the nose
  • Snoring caused by nasal obstruction
  • Frequent inflammation of the nose and sinuses
  • Milder forms of obstructive sleep apnoea

Suitable for:

  • Adults and adolescents (approx. 16-18 years of age) after the growth of the nasal structures is complete
  • Patients with hypertrophy of the nasal mucosa
  • Patients with proven deviation of the nasal septum

Consultation with a doctor

  • Examination of the nasal cavity by an ENT doctor
  • If endoscopy is necessary
  • Sometimes it is supplemented by so-called rhinomammometry
  • Recommendation of the appropriate method of intervention

Preoperative examination

  • ECG, blood tests, possibly sonography of the breasts
  • It is possible to undergo an examination at our clinic
  • Results must be no older than 14 days before the procedure
  • Inform the doctor about the medicines and supplements you are taking
  • Allergological follow-up examination is preferably

Preparation before the procedure

  • 7 days before the procedure, take out blood thinners
  • 24 h before the procedure no smoking
  • 12 h before the operation do not eat, drink alcohol or coffee

Procedure

  • It lasts 60-90 minutes.
  • The septum is straightened using a closed technique or endoscopically.
  • Reduction of thickened nasal mucosa
  • Introduction of nasal splint (thin artificial splint) – prevents hematoma formation

After the procedure

  • Hospitalization for 1 day or with bedtime only – patient goes home in approx. 4 hours
  • There is no bruising, no swelling after surgery.
  • After surgery, a tamponade is inserted for 1 day (overnight), or a dissolvable tamponade can be inserted

Follow up

  • 10-14 days, nasal splints are removed.

Long-term controls

  • Usually they are not needed.
  • According to individual patient needs

Increased restriction: 1-2 weeks of rest after the procedure

Recommendations

  • Swelling and bruising in the face are not
  • Mild pain in the nose usually lasts 2-3 days
  • Quiet mode 1-2 weeks
  • Skipping sports for at least 2-3 weeks

Contraindications

Possible complications

The treatment is not suitable for people who:

  • With acute upper respiratory tract infection
  • With blood clotting disorders
  • Pregnant women

Possible complications are rare and may include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Temporary deterioration of nasal patency
  • Perforation of the nasal septum
