What is lipedema?

Lipedema is a chronic disease of adipose tissue, which manifests itself as symmetrical swelling of the lower limbs, and less often of the arms. It affects almost exclusively women. Typical symptoms are soreness to the touch, easy bruising and a feeling of heaviness in the legs. The disease is often genetic and its occurrence is associated with hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy or menopause. It is often confused with obesity or lymphoedema.

  • The procedure is usually divided into two phases – front and back

After the procedure

  • The patient usually stays in the clinic for 1-2 days
  • Wearing compression underwear, which is worn even when sleeping
  • Soreness is mild, possibly relieved by medication
  • Lessons on post-operative care and scar care
  • Make sure you get a ride home – you may not be able to drive immediately after the procedure.

Increased restriction: one week of rest after the procedure

Recommendations

  • Return to work after 2-4 days (office work)
  • Wearing compression underwear for a minimum of 6 weeks
  • Sport and physical activity from week 3
  • Final result visible in 3-6 months
  • Long-term care: lymphatic drainage, healthy lifestyle
  • Usually 2-3 procedures are performed at least 3 months apart

The treatment is not suitable for people who:

  • With blood clotting disorder
  • With active infection
  • With obesity (recommended weight reduction before the procedure)

Possible complications are rare and may include:

  • Swelling and bruising are common and go away within a few weeks
  • Temporary numbness, which gradually recovers
  • Roughness and irregularity of the skin surface
  • Inflammation or infection at the injection site
