What is breast implant removal?

Breast implant removal or explantation is a quick procedure that can stand alone or be combined with breast reshaping for a natural and harmonious look. Breast implant removal is a surgical procedure in which the doctor removes one or both silicone implants. The procedure may be indicated for medical reasons (e.g., capsular contracture, pain, presence of a tumor) or at the patient’s request. It is often combined with breast lift, which helps to reshape and firm the breasts after filler removal.

Consultation with an expert

  • Assessment of the current condition of the breasts and overall health
  • Discussion of the reasons for the procedure and options for breast shaping
  • Proposal for breast reshaping, if applicable, to achieve optimal results
  • Cost estimate and scheduling of the procedure

Preoperative examination

  • ECG, blood tests, possibly sonography of the breasts
  • It is possible to undergo an examination at our clinic
  • Blood test results must not be older than 30 days before the procedure
  • Inform the doctor about the medicines and supplements you are taking

Preparation before the procedure

  • Stop taking blood thinners 7 days before the procedure
  • Do not smoke for 24 hours before the procedure
  • 12 h before the operation do not eat, drink alcohol or coffee
  • Do not use body creams and perfumes on the day of the procedure

Procedure

  • Takes approximately 30 minutes (simple removal) to 2 hours if combined with breast lift
  • It is performed under general anaesthesia
  • The implant is removed using the original surgical approach
  • If necessary, breast lift  is performed

After the procedure

  • Short-term hospitalization (usually 1 day)
  • Instructions on postoperative care and scar control
  • Wearing an elastic bra is suitable

Follow up

  • First follow up visit, 7-14 days after the procedure
  • Further follow up visits depending on the individual healing process

Aftercare

Increased restriction: one week of rest after the procedure

Recommendations

  • Wearing an elastic bra for 4 weeks
  • Sleep on your back for 2 weeks
  • Resting mode for at least 7-10 days
  • Return to office work after 7-10 days
  • Sports and physical exercise after consultation with a doctor (usually in 6-8 weeks)
  • Scar massage and skin care from the 3rd week after the procedure

Contraindications

Possible complications

The treatment is not suitable for people who:

  • With an ongoing infectious disease
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • Patients with untreated chronic disease

Possible complications are rare and may include:

  • Bleeding, swelling, infection
  • Healing disorders and rough scar formation
  • Breast sagging following the removal of larger implants (treatable with breast reshaping)
