What is Pectus Excavatum surgery?

Pectus excavatum, is a congenital deformity of the sternum and ribs in which the center of the chest sinks inward. The problem is not merely cosmetic, it can also impair breathing and posture. This is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting the sunken portion of the chest to restore its normal shape. Methods used include open surgical correction (e.g., the Ravitch method) or minimally invasive procedures (e.g., the Nuss method), in which a metal plate is inserted under the skin to mechanically correct the chest.

  • Assessment of the degree of chest retraction (using CT or X-ray)
  • Selection of an appropriate surgical technique

Preoperative examination

    • Preoperative examinations, ECG, blood tests – can be performed at our clinic
    • Blood test results must not be older than 30 days prior to the procedure
    • Pulmonary and cardiological examinations

Preparation before the procedure

  • Stop taking blood thinners 7 days before the procedure
  • Do not smoke for 24 hours before procedure
  • 12 h before the operation do not eat, drink alcohol or coffee
  • Do not use body creams and perfumes on the day of the procedure

Procedure

    • Lasts 1.5-3 hours depending on the type of technique
    • Minimally invasive (Nuss method) – insertion of a metal arch under the sternum
    • Open correction – direct modification of the bone structure
    • Installation of drainage, elastic bandage

After the procedure

  • Hospitalization 5-7 days
  • Administration of pain relievers and monitoring of healing
  • Limiting physical activity for several weeks to months

Follow up

  • First follow-up visit within one week of discharge
  • Long-term follow-up in the case of an implant (usually removed after 2–3 years)

Recovery

Aftercare

High restriction: at least 2 weeks of rest

Recommendations

  • Sleep on your back for 4 weeks
  • Physical exercise possible only after 2 months
  • Elastic bandages, check-ups and possible rehabilitation as recommended by the doctor

Contraindications

Possible complications

The treatment is not suitable for people who:

  • With acute infection
  • With severe heart or lung disease without stabilization
  • Persons under 14 years of age (individually assessed)

Possible complications are rare and may include:

  • Bleeding, infection, pain
  • Reaction to metal reinforcement
  • Need for reoperation in case of method failure
