What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

A common condition caused by nerve compression in the wrist area – this is compression of the median nerve (nervus medianus) in the carpal tunnel. The disorder manifests itself as tingling, pain, nocturnal seizures and decreased sensation in the first three fingers and part of the fourth. In the long term, it can lead to muscle wasting in the thumb and loss of fine motor skills. Surgical carpal tunnel release is a quick and effective way to prevent permanent nerve damage.

  • Clinical examination and sensitivity tests
  • To clarify the scope of electromyography (EMG), which evaluates the conductivity of the nerve
  • Explanation of the operation and follow-up care

Preparation before the procedure

  • Discontinue or adjust the dosage of blood thinners 7 days before the procedure as agreed with the doctor
  • 2 – 3 hours before the procedure a light meal
  • Not wearing jewelry or nail polish in the area

Procedure

  • Outpatient procedure in local anaesthesia
  • Relieving pressure on the nerve by removing excess ligament
  • Duration of the procedure approx. 20-30 minutes

After the procedure

  • The hand is secured with a bandage or splint in a functional position
  • Elevation is recommended
  • Analgesics and early rehabilitation

Follow up

  • Takes place in 7-14 days, depending on wound healing and hand function

Possible complications

The treatment is not suitable for people who:

  • With acute infection at the site of surgery
  • With severe general disease without stabilization
  • Allergic to anaesthetics or disinfectants

Possible complications are rare and may include:

  • Damage to the nerve or its branches, which may cause impaired sensation or impaired thumb mobility
  • Tendon injuries.
  • Soreness of the scar and swelling of the hand.
  • Aggravation of chronic inflammation of the tendon sheaths – can lead to blocking of the fingers when bending.
  • Formation of excessive scarring or adhesions – can cause the return of difficulties (recurrence).
  • Bleeding, infections, nerve or tendon injuries
  • Scarring and re-limitation of mobility without rehabilitation
  • Disease recurrence – even after surgery, the condition can reappear
